Biography
Marcel Escoffier (29 November 1910 – 9 January 2001) was a Monégasque-French costume designer. Born in Monte Carlo, he studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, specialising in historical costumes.
He began his film career as assistant to Christian Bérard and created costumes, often with him, for Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et la Bête (1946) and Orphée (1950). He worked repeatedly with Christian-Jaque, Jean Delannoy and others on historical films, and collaborated with Luchino Visconti on Senso (1954), Max Ophüls on Lola Montès (1955) and Franco Zeffirelli on the television series Jesus of Nazareth (1977). His credits also include Les Misérables (1958) and Mayerling (1968). Escoffier designed for theatre, including two Broadway productions, and for opera.
