Biography
Margaret Rutherford was an English actress. Born Margaret Taylor Rutherford on 11 May 1892 in Balham, London, she died on 22 May 1972.
She trained at the Old Vic and began appearing on the London stage in the early 1930s. Her film roles included Madame Arcati in the adaptation of Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit (1945) and Miss Prism in the adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest (1952).
Rutherford played Miss Jane Marple in four films released between 1961 and 1964. She appeared as Mistress Quickly in Orson Welles’s Chimes at Midnight (1965). For her performance in The V.I.P.s (1963) she received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was appointed DBE in 1967.
