Biography
Margit Symo (also credited as Margit Simo) was a Hungarian-born German actress and dancer. Born in Budapest, she trained there and achieved early success in stage revues and operettas in Hungary before moving to Germany in the early 1930s. She performed at the Metropol Theater in Berlin as part of a dance team with her brother Michael.
Symo made her film debut in Zigeunerblut (1934) and appeared in numerous German entertainment films through the 1930s and 1940s, often in roles as dancers, gypsies or exotic characters, and contributed to soundtracks. She was married to the composer Willy Mattes; the couple lived in Sweden from 1946 until their divorce in 1951, after which she returned to Germany. Their daughter, Eva Mattes, also became an actress.
From the mid-1950s her screen appearances became sporadic and mostly in supporting roles or on television. Notable later credits include Ich denke oft an Piroschka (1955), Der tolle Bomberg (1957) and Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974), in which she played Hedwig. She died in Munich in 1992.
