Biography
Marguerite Duras, born Marguerite Donnadieu, was a French novelist, playwright, screenwriter and film director. She wrote the screenplay for Alain Resnais’s Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959), for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Duras was born on 4 April 1914 in Gia Định, French Indochina (now Vietnam), and died on 3 March 1996 in Paris. She studied law and politics at the Sorbonne. She directed experimental features including India Song (1975) and adapted several of her own novels and plays for the screen.
Her best-known novel, The Lover (1984), won the Prix Goncourt and was adapted into a film in 1992.
