Biography
Mario Socrate (1920–2012) was an Italian writer, poet and screenwriter. Born and died in Rome, he wrote screenplays for films including Achtung! Banditi! (1951), La strada lunga un anno (1958) and Il gobbo (1960). He also appeared as Giovanni Battista in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964).
A Hispanist and translator from Spanish, French and Russian, Socrate published poetry and fiction with Feltrinelli and Garzanti. His collection Punto di vista (1985) won the Premio Viareggio. He was professor emeritus at Roma Tre University, co-founded the magazine Città aperta and was the son of painter Carlo Socrate.
