Biography
Marion Mathie (also credited as Marion Douglas Mathie) was an English actress. Born on 6 February 1925 in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, she trained as an actress and made her stage debut in 1947 at the first Edinburgh International Festival in the musical comedy The Dubarry, appearing alongside John Le Mesurier. She was a member of Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre Company in the early 1950s and later worked with several English repertory companies.
Mathie appeared in numerous television series from the late 1950s onwards, including episodes of Dixon of Dock Green, The Saint (as Sheila Sentinal in 1962) and Department S. Her film roles included Miss Lebone in Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita (1962) and Anna Mueller in Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1968). She was best known for playing Hilda Rumpole (“She Who Must Be Obeyed”) in the last four series of Rumpole of the Bailey (1987–1992), taking over the part from Peggy Thorpe-Bates, and as Mrs Susan Wyse MBE in the adaptation of Mapp & Lucia (1985–1986).
In 1963 she married actor John Humphry; he predeceased her in 2007. Mathie died on 20 January 2012 in West Sussex, aged 86.
