Biography

Marita Breuer is a German actress. Born on 20 January 1953 in Düren, she trained in acting at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen after earlier studies in rhythmics at the Cologne Music Academy. Her first professional engagement was at the Stadttheater Gießen; she later worked in experimental theatre groups and joined the ensemble at the Aachen Theatre from 2000 to 2005.

Breuer is best known for portraying Maria Simon across all eleven episodes of Edgar Reitz’s Heimat (1984). She reprised an ancestor of the character as Margarethe Simon in the prequel Home from Home – Chronicle of a Vision (2013). Other screen credits include The Princess and the Warrior (2000), Berlin '36 (2009) and multiple episodes of Tatort and Scene of the Crime.

For her performance in Heimat she received the Bavarian Film Award for Best Actress in 1984 and the Deutscher Darstellerpreis in 1985. She continues to work in theatre, film and television.
