Biography
Mark Medoff was an American playwright, screenwriter, director and professor. He wrote the play Children of a Lesser God, which premiered in 1979 and opened on Broadway in 1980, winning the Tony Award for Best Play. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 1986 film adaptation with Hesper Anderson.
Medoff was born on 18 March 1940 in Mount Carmel, Illinois, and raised in Miami Beach, Florida. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami and a master’s from Stanford University. From 1966 he taught at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces for more than fifty years. His other screenplays include Good Guys Wear Black (1978), Clara’s Heart (1988) and City of Joy (1992). He died on 23 April 2019 in Las Cruces.
