Biography
Marlon Troy Riggs (3 February 1957 – 5 April 1994) was an American filmmaker, educator and poet. He directed, produced, wrote, edited and photographed the experimental documentary Tongues Untied (1989), in which he also appeared.
Riggs graduated from Harvard University in 1978 and received a master's degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1981. He became the youngest tenured professor in the arts and humanities at Berkeley. His other documentaries include Ethnic Notions (1986), Color Adjustment (1992) and Black Is... Black Ain't (1994). His work examined representations of race and sexuality in the United States. The Marlon Riggs Collection is held at Stanford University Libraries.
