Biography
Martin Margiela is a Belgian fashion designer and founder of the luxury fashion house Maison Margiela. He is credited as one of the costume designers on Peter Greenaway's film The Pillow Book (1996), alongside Dien van Straalen and Koji Tatsuno.
Margiela graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and worked as an assistant to Jean Paul Gaultier before establishing his own label in 1988. He maintained a low public profile throughout his fashion career, avoiding interviews and photographs. After retiring from fashion in 2009, he has worked as an artist.
