Biography
Martin Sherman is an American playwright and screenwriter. Born in Philadelphia in 1938, he studied at Boston University College of Fine Arts, where he received a BFA in Dramatic Arts in 1960, and trained at the Actors Studio. He has lived and worked in London since 1980.
Sherman is best known for his stage play Bent (1979), which was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 1980 and won the Dramatists Guild's Hull-Warriner Award; he adapted it for a 1997 film. His other notable screenwriting credits include The Clothes in the Wardrobe (1993, released in the US as The Summer House), Alive and Kicking (1996), Callas Forever (2002), The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (2003) and Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005). He has also written musicals such as The Boy from Oz (2003).
