Biography
Marvin Hayes (1926–1995) was an American actor and bass-baritone singer. He provided the singing voice for Husky Miller in the 1954 film Carmen Jones, and performed the song "Stan' Up an' Fight" for the soundtrack.
Born into a large family in North Carolina, Hayes sang with the US Army gospel choir "Wings Over Jordan" during military service. He studied with teachers including Todd Duncan and Pierre Bernac, and made his recital debut at Town Hall in New York in the 1950s. He performed widely across the United States, frequently as bass soloist in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
Hayes later lived in Pacific Palisades, California, and taught voice at institutions including Pomona College. He appeared as himself on the television series Lamp Unto My Feet in 1962. He was married to concert pianist Althea Waites.
