Biography
Mary Stephen is a film editor and director. Born in Hong Kong in 1953, she later lived in Canada before moving to Paris in the 1970s to study film. She has worked extensively as an editor on both European and Chinese-language productions.
Stephen was the regular editor for director Éric Rohmer from 1992 until his final film in 2007, collaborating on titles including A Tale of Winter (1992), A Summer's Tale (1996), An Autumn Tale (1998) and The Romance of Astrea and Celadon (2007). She has also edited documentaries and features such as Last Train Home (2009) and Ann Hui’s Our Time Will Come (2017). In addition to editing, she has directed her own films and co-composed music for several Rohmer projects under the pseudonym Sébastien Erms.
Stephen was appointed a Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters in 2018 and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
