Biography

Mat Whitecross (born 21 September 1977) is an English film director, editor and screenwriter. He began his career at Revolution Films, working with director Michael Winterbottom and producer Andrew Eaton. He started as a runner on 24 Hour Party People (2002) and soon took on shooting and editing duties.

Whitecross co-directed and co-wrote the docudrama The Road to Guantánamo (2006) with Winterbottom; the film won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival. He edited 9 Songs (2004) and directed the Ian Dury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (2010). Other credits include the documentaries Moving to Mars (2009) and The Shock Doctrine (2009, co-directed with Winterbottom), as well as the features Ashes (2012) and Spike Island (2012).

He is a frequent collaborator with Coldplay, directing music videos for the band and the documentaries Oasis: Supersonic (2016) and Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams (2018). Later work includes the television series Fleming (2014) and the documentaries The Sound of 007 (2022) and Ídolos (2026).
