Biography
Matthew Cooper is a British screenwriter and director, also credited as Matt Cooper. He began his career as a scriptwriter with a Channel 4 short film in 1993 and went on to write for several UK soap operas, including episodes of EastEnders (2003), Emmerdale and Hollyoaks.
He was the youngest core writer on the Emmerdale team and contributed to storylines on Hollyoaks that helped increase viewing figures. Cooper is BAFTA shortlisted and Royal Television Society nominated for his television writing. He has also worked as a script consultant on feature films.
As a director, he has made a series of low-budget horror films inspired by H. P. Lovecraft, including Markham (2020), At the Mountains of Madness (2021) and When the Earth Gives Up the Dead (2022), released online. He has directed additional features such as Sober (2025).
