Biography
Matthew J. Saville is a New Zealand actor, writer and film director. Born in Durban, South Africa, to a New Zealander mother and South African father, he moved to New Zealand as a child. He studied acting at Toi Whakaari after discovering theatre and film at university.
Saville wrote and directed the short films Hitch Hike (2012) and Dive (2014), the latter of which won awards at Show Me Shorts. His feature directorial debut, Juniper (2021), which he also wrote, starred Charlotte Rampling. He has acted in films including X (2022) as Officer Mitchell and Black Sheep (2006), as well as in television series such as Spartacus (2010) and The Almighty Johnsons (2013). He has also written for New Zealand television, including Shortland Street (2005).
