Biography
Maurice Pialat was a French film director, screenwriter and actor. He was born on 31 August 1925 in Cunlhat, Puy-de-Dôme, and died on 11 January 2003 in Paris.
Pialat came to feature filmmaking late, directing his debut L'enfance nue (Naked Childhood, 1969) at the age of 43. He went on to complete ten features over a 35-year career. His work is noted for its rigorous and unsentimental style, often drawing on autobiographical elements. He directed Gérard Depardieu in four films, including Loulou (1980), on which he also served as writer.
Pialat won the Palme d'Or at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival for Sous le soleil de Satan (Under the Sun of Satan). Other notable films include À nos amours (1983), Police (1985) and Van Gogh (1991).
