Biography
Mel Stuart (born Stuart Solomon) was an American film director and producer. Born in New York City on 2 September 1928, he died in Los Angeles on 9 August 2012. He directed the fantasy musical Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971).
Stuart worked for 17 years at the production company of David L. Wolper before going freelance. He directed or produced numerous documentaries, including the Oscar-nominated Four Days in November (1964) and Wattstax (1973), as well as episodes of the The Making of the President series. His other feature films include If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969). He received four Emmy awards and an Academy Award nomination.
