Biography
Michele Placido is an Italian actor, film director and screenwriter. Born on 19 May 1946 in Ascoli Satriano, Apulia, he trained at the Accademia Nazionale di Arte Drammatica Silvio D'Amico. He began his career on stage and first gained attention in films directed by Mario Monicelli and Marco Bellocchio.
Placido is known for portraying police inspector Corrado Cattani in the television series La piovra (1984–2001) and for roles in films such as Three Brothers (1981) and Lamerica (1994). He has also directed films, beginning with Pummarò (1990), which screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. Three of his films have competed for the Golden Lion at Venice. He is the brother of actor Gerardo Amato.
