Michelle Buteau brings warmth and confident delivery to outspoken comic characters. We rate her ease with an ensemble, but Spa Weekend shows why she needs more than agreeable company and a handful of decent jokes.

In Spa Weekend (2026), Michelle Buteau’s Coco is one of the few characters who seems to have been given enough thought. That matters: Buteau gets something to play, and her delivery supplies several of the comedy’s scattered laughs. We laughed at her jokes, then grew impatient with the long waits between worthwhile ones. The film is poor, but she fares best in a cast that deserves better. It is a useful place to see her strengths and the limits of what a performer can repair.
Her stand-up career preceded the wider notice that came with supporting roles in Isn't It Romantic (2019) and Always Be My Maybe (2019). The recurring casting as an outspoken friend or colleague suits her confident delivery. Television gave her an ensemble lead as Bree Washington in First Wives Club (2019). The larger change came with Survival of the Thickest (2023): she plays Mavis Beaumont and created, wrote and produced the series, adapted from her own 2020 essay collection.
Welcome to Buteaupia (2020) makes the attraction of her stand-up plain: directness, raunch and warmth, with expressive reactions and physical energy doing their share of the work. The limitation is an occasional reliance on familiar routines and inspirational reassurance. We want the jokes to be allowed to end without making everybody feel better. Her move into writing her own series is worth following because it lets her decide what a character does as well as how she delivers the lines.
What works in Spa Weekend is the combination of performers: Buteau’s delivery, Isla Fisher’s disruptive Mel, and the easy rapport with Leslie Mann and Anna Faris. Coco is more developed than her companions, so the comparison is not entirely fair to the other actors. Still, Buteau makes the few adequate jokes count, and the group occasionally achieves the loose, companionable comedy the film promises. The repeated wellness jokes and unearned sentiment keep interrupting that pleasure. Start with Survival of the Thickest for a fuller introduction; there is little reason to make Spa Weekend the first acquaintance.
Biography
Michelle Buteau is an American actress and stand-up comedian. Born on 24 July 1977 in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, she studied television production at Florida International University and began performing stand-up comedy shortly after the September 11 attacks while working as a news producer in New York.
Buteau is known for supporting roles in films including Isn't It Romantic (2019), Someone Great (2019), Always Be My Maybe (2019), Happiest Season (2020), Work It (2020), Marry Me (2022) and Crush (2022). She plays Coco in the 2026 ensemble comedy Spa Weekend. She created, writes and stars in the Netflix series Survival of the Thickest (2023–), adapted from her 2020 essay collection, and has hosted the reality series The Circle.
