Biography

Michelle Savill is a New Zealand writer and director. She began making short films while studying at Wintec in Hamilton, with her student film Betty Banned Sweets (2008) screening at international festivals including Clermont-Ferrand. Her short Ellen Is Leaving (2012) won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Short at SXSW and the San Francisco International Film Festival.

Savill’s debut feature Millie Lies Low (2021), which she also co-wrote, had its international premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2022 and its US premiere at SXSW. She has directed episodes of the series Sex Education (2023) and Industry (2026). She has also worked in commercials and attended the Berlinale Talent Lab.
