Miguel Bernardeau has spent a decade playing well-born young men who are made to change, and he plays them at full heat. In La bola negra that heat is plain to see; what we are still waiting for is stillness.
Fi1m perspective
Watch Miguel Bernardeau as Rafael in La bola negra (2026) and you can see the effort. He leans into every scene, he burns, and the film gives him plenty to burn about. What he does not do is settle. Next to Penélope Cruz, who can stand in a doorway and let a scene happen to her, and Guitarricadelafuente, whose stillness the camera keeps returning to, Bernardeau is the one on screen working hardest, and we could tell. Our review said he gives Rafael more heat than depth, and added that this may be the part. We stand by both halves.
The career so far is a run of well-born young men who start out difficult and are made to change. He began with small television parts in 2016, made his film debut in It's for Your Own Good (2017), and became known as Guzmán in the teen series Elite (2018–2021), where the pattern was set. 1899 (2022) put him in an international ensemble as Ángel. Zorro (2024) handed him Diego de la Vega, a rich young man with a conscience he has to hide. He has said he does not feel typecast by Elite, and we believe him, but it is fair to say the industry noticed one thing he does and asked for it again.
The more interesting turn is Querer (2024), the miniseries from Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, in which he plays Aitor Gorosmendi and, by the accounts that reached us, does the contained, inward work that the heat elsewhere tends to cover. We have not reviewed it and will not pretend to a verdict; we note that it is where his reputation as a serious actor was made, and that it came from a director rather than a franchise. La bola negra, from Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, is the first time he has carried a film of that kind, and he carries it the way he carries everything, forward and at pace.
Which is the reservation. Bernardeau has intensity and commitment, and he does the reading for the historical parts. What we have not yet seen him do on a cinema screen is stop. The best moments in La bola negra belong to actors who do less, and he is standing beside them. He has spoken recently of wanting roles that frighten him. Good. The one that would frighten him most is a man who says nothing for a scene and is understood anyway.
