Biography
Monique Fortier (1928–2025) was a Canadian film editor and director. She began her career at the National Film Board of Canada in the 1950s, becoming one of the first women to work there. In 1963 she directed the short documentary The Hour of Independence (À l’heure de la décolonisation), the first film directed by a French Canadian woman at the NFB; she followed this with La beauté même in 1964.
Fortier worked principally as an editor on films including September Five at Saint-Henri (À St-Henri le cinq septembre) (1962), The River Schooners (Les Voitures d'eau) (1968), Acadia, Acadia?!? (L'Acadie, L'Acadie?!?) (1971) and The Crime of Ovide Plouffe (1984). She won the Genie Award for Best Editing for The Decline of the American Empire (Le Déclin de l'empire américain) (1986) and received a nomination for the earlier film. Her final editing credit was The Big Snake of the World (Le Grand serpent du monde) (1999).
