Biography
Naseeruddin Shah is an Indian actor who works in film, television and theatre. He trained at the National School of Drama in Delhi and the Film and Television Institute of India after graduating from Aligarh Muslim University.
Shah rose to prominence in the parallel cinema movement of the 1970s and 1980s with roles in films such as Nishant (1975), Sparsh (1980) and Paar (1984). He is also known for performances in Monsoon Wedding (2001) as Lalit Verma, Sarfarosh (1999) as Gulfam Hassan, A Wednesday! (2008) and the Krrish series (2006–2013). In 2026 he appeared as Ishar Singh Grewal in Main Vaapas Aaunga.
He has received three National Film Awards, three Filmfare Awards and the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 1987 and the Padma Bhushan in 2003.
