Biography
Nathan Waks is an Australian cellist and composer. Born in 1951, he studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and won the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition in 1968. He co-founded the Fidelio Quartet in 1969 and served briefly as principal cellist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Waks composed or arranged the score for the film My Brilliant Career (1979). His other film credits include Intimate Strangers (1981), Hunger (1986), For Love Alone (1986, nominated for an AACTA Award for Best Original Music Score) and Kangaroo (1987). He was musical director for The Removalists (1975).
Beyond composition, Waks has held senior arts administration roles, including as a founding director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Australian Music Centre, and as director of music at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
