Biography
Nelson Rodríguez was a Cuban film editor. Born in Cienfuegos in 1938, he joined the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC) in 1960, initially working as a production assistant and producer on newsreels and documentaries with Santiago Álvarez before moving into feature editing.
He edited numerous Cuban films of the 1960s and later decades, including Memories of Underdevelopment (1968) directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Lucía (1968) directed by Humberto Solás, with whom he also collaborated as a co-writer. His work extended to other prominent Cuban directors such as Manuel Octavio Gómez and Sergio Giral, as well as Latin American filmmakers including Miguel Littín and María Novaro.
Rodríguez received the Premio Nacional de Cine de Cuba in 2007. He taught at the International School of Film and Television in San Antonio de los Baños and died in Coral Gables, Florida, in 2020.
