Biography
Nim Chimpsky (19 November 1973 – 10 March 2000) was a chimpanzee who appeared in archive footage as Self in the 2011 documentary film Project Nim.
He was the subject of a 1970s study led by psychologist Herbert S. Terrace at Columbia University, which sought to determine whether a chimpanzee could acquire American Sign Language when raised in human households. Nim learned over 100 signs but the researchers concluded that his use was primarily imitative.
