Biography
Norman Shelley (16 February 1903 – August 1980) was a British actor. Born in Chelsea, London, he began his career on the stage as a Shakespearean actor in the 1920s before moving into radio, film and television.
Shelley was best known for his long career in BBC radio. He voiced Winnie-the-Pooh in Children's Hour adaptations of A. A. Milne’s stories, Dr Watson opposite Carleton Hobbs in the Sherlock Holmes series (1952–1969), and Colonel Danby in The Archers. He also played Gandalf and Tom Bombadil in the 1955–56 radio adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.
His film and television credits include the voice of Sir Robert Bellinger in I Know Where I'm Going! (1945), an uncredited voice role as Winston Churchill in Sink the Bismarck! (1960), and appearances in Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969), Oh! What a Lovely War (1969) and All Creatures Great and Small (1978). He was married to Monica Brett.
