Biography
Oliver Smith (13 February 1918 – 23 January 1994) was an American scenic designer and production designer. Born in Waupun, Wisconsin, he became one of the leading Broadway set designers of the mid-twentieth century and also worked in film and opera.
He received production design credit on the films Guys and Dolls (1955) and Oklahoma! (1955), and designed the musical numbers for The Band Wagon (1953). Smith designed dozens of Broadway productions, including the original stagings of My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Camelot and Hello, Dolly!. He was co-director of the American Ballet Theatre for thirty-five years and won ten Tony Awards for scenic design.
