Biography
Omar Valdés was a Cuban actor. Born in Havana in 1929, he worked as an accountant, IBM technician and typist before training as an actor. In 1955 he took a course at the Universidad de Oriente with Francisco Morín, followed by four years of study with Vicente Revuelta at Teatro Estudio. He performed in theatre in Oriente province before 1958 and then in Havana with groups including Prometeo, OCUJE, Conjunto Dramático Nacional, La Rueda, Taller Dramático Latinoamericano and Teatro Estudio.
His stage roles included productions of La soprano calva, El alma buena de Se Chuan, La muerte de un viajante, Madre Coraje and Romeo y Julieta. Valdés began his film career in 1964 and appeared in titles such as Memories of Underdevelopment (1968) as Pablo, Hasta cierto punto (1983) as Arturo and La bella del Alhambra (1989) as Federico. He also worked in television, notably in the series Filomena Marturano. A UNEAC prize for male acting is named after him. He died in 1999.
