Biography

Paul Bertrand was a French production designer, art director and set decorator. Born on 4 April 1915 in Chalon-sur-Saône, Saône-et-Loire, he died on 19 April 1994 in the same town. He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and began in advertising and decoration before entering film as an assistant to Alexandre Trauner.

Bertrand worked on numerous French films from the 1940s to the 1960s, often in collaboration with directors René Clément and Marcel Carné. His credits include production design on The Damned (1947), Thérèse Raquin (1953), Gervaise (1956) and Purple Noon (1960), and art direction on Forbidden Games (1952).
