Biography
Paul Lieberenz was a German cinematographer, director and documentary filmmaker. Born in Berlin on 13 February 1893, he began in the studios of Oskar Messter and UFA before working as a cameraman on expeditions, including Hans Schomburgk’s 1923 film in Liberia and Sven Hedin’s journey through the Gobi desert, released as Mit Sven Hedin durch Asiens Wüsten (1929).
He served as one of the cinematographers on Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will (1935) and made several propaganda films for the Nazi government, among them Deutsche Kulturarbeit in Kamerun (1935). With his wife Gerti he ran Lieberenz Film Produktion in Berlin, specialising in Kulturfilme and travel documentaries. Post-war credits include directing Wir bummeln um die Welt (1949).
Lieberenz died in Berlin on 31 August 1954.
