Biography
Pearl Argyle (born Pearl Wellman) was a South African-born ballet dancer and actress. She trained in London with Marie Rambert and Nikolai Legat, making her debut in 1926 with Rambert's company. She became a principal dancer with Ballet Rambert, the Camargo Society and the Vic-Wells Ballet, creating roles in works by Frederick Ashton and others.
Argyle also appeared in British films, including Chu Chin Chow (1934) and Things to Come (1936), in which she played Catherine Cabal. She performed in revues and, after marrying American film director Curtis Bernhardt in 1936, moved to the United States, where she danced in Broadway musicals such as One Touch of Venus. She died in New York City on 29 January 1947, aged 36.
