Biography
Perry Henzell was a Jamaican film director, writer and producer. He directed, co-wrote with Trevor D. Rhone and produced The Harder They Come (1972), the first Jamaican feature film, which starred Jimmy Cliff and helped introduce reggae music internationally.
Born in Annotto Bay, Jamaica, Henzell was educated at Shrewsbury School in England and briefly attended McGill University in Canada. He worked as a stagehand at the BBC in London before returning to Jamaica, where he directed commercials. After the success of his debut feature, he wrote two novels, Power Game (1982) and Cane (2003). He died in Treasure Beach, Jamaica.
