Biography
Peter Watkins (29 October 1935 – 30 October 2025) was an English filmmaker, documentarian, screenwriter and producer. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after national service and began with amateur short films before joining the BBC in the early 1960s.
Watkins directed, wrote and produced The War Game (1966), which was commissioned for television but banned from broadcast by the BBC and later released theatrically, winning the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. His other notable works include Culloden (1964), Punishment Park (1971), Edvard Munch (1974) and La Commune (Paris, 1871) (2003). He frequently employed docudrama techniques with non-professional actors and focused on political and historical subjects.
