Biography
Petru Popescu is a Romanian-American writer, screenwriter and director. Born in Bucharest in 1944, he was an established novelist in Romania before defecting in the mid-1970s. He studied at the American Film Institute's Center for Advanced Film Studies and settled in the United States.
His screenwriting credits include the 1977 Australian film The Last Wave, co-written with Peter Weir and Tony Morphett, and uncredited work on Friday the 13th Part III (1982). He also wrote for television series such as Emma: Queen of the South Seas (1988) and the TV film Nobody's Children (1994). Popescu directed Death of an Angel (1986).
As an author he is known for English-language novels including Almost Adam and Amazon Beaming. He is married to screenwriter Iris Friedman.
