Biography
Phil Bertelsen is an American director, producer and writer of documentaries and episodic television. Born and raised in New Jersey, he holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Rutgers University and an MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he was a Johnson Scholar and Spike Lee Fellow.
His early short film Around the Time (1997) received a Student Academy Award. He has directed documentaries including The Sunshine (2000), Who Killed Malcolm X? (2020) and The Picture Taker (2022), and episodes of series such as The Blacklist (2021), Madam Secretary (2018), The 1619 Project (2023) and Finding Your Roots. Bertelsen is an Emmy and Peabody award winner.
