Biography
Philip Stainton (9 April 1908 – 1 August 1961) was an English actor. He appeared in numerous British films, frequently cast as uniformed policemen.
Stainton featured in several Ealing comedies, including Passport to Pimlico (1949) as P.C. Spiller, Hobson's Choice (1954) as Denton and The Ladykillers (1955) as The Sergeant. Other credits include Mogambo (1953) as John Brown-Pryce, Moby Dick (1956) as Bildad, Cast a Dark Shadow (1955) as Charlie Mann and Reach for the Sky (1956) as a police constable. He also worked in stage repertory and was twice directed by John Ford.
In the late 1950s Stainton and his wife immigrated to Australia, where he appeared in television and stage productions, including heading the sitcom Take That (1957–1959). He died in Melbourne during a performance of East Lynne.
