Biography
Philippe Cousteau (30 December 1940 – 28 June 1979) was a French director, cinematographer and oceanographer. The second son of Jacques Cousteau and Simone Melchior, he was born in Toulon and began diving at a young age. He trained in aerodynamics and cinematography before joining his father’s expeditions.
Cousteau worked as lead cinematographer and director on numerous Cousteau films and television series, including episodes of The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau (1966–1975) and The Cousteau Odyssey (1977–). He specialised in underwater, aerial and environmental filming, and received Emmy nominations for his contributions. He died in a plane crash in Portugal at the age of 38.
