Biography
Pierre Gascar was the pen name of Pierre Fournier, a French journalist, literary critic, writer, essayist and screenwriter. Born in Paris on 13 March 1916, he was imprisoned in German camps during the Second World War, an experience reflected in his writing.
After the war he worked as a journalist and critic. In 1953 he received the Prix Goncourt for the volumes Les Bêtes and Le Temps des morts. He contributed dialogue to Georges Franju’s 1960 film Eyes Without a Face.
Gascar later wrote biographies and studies of nature. He received the Prix Roger Caillois in 1994 and died on 20 February 1997 in Lons-le-Saunier.
