Biography
Pierre Unik (1909–1945) was a French screenwriter, poet and journalist. Born in Paris, he joined the surrealist group as a teenager and later became a member of the French Communist Party.
He wrote the narration for Luis Buñuel’s Land Without Bread (1933), on which he also worked as assistant director, and contributed to other films including Life Is Ours (1936) and Le temps des cerises (1938). During the 1930s he served as a journalist and editor for communist publications such as L’Humanité and Regards.
Mobilised in 1939, Unik was taken prisoner during the Second World War. He escaped from a camp in Silesia in early 1945 but disappeared in the mountains and was presumed dead on 27 February 1945.
