Prashanth Neel knows how to make a leading man seem capable of anything. His extravagant action excites us in bursts, but repetitive writing, abrupt cutting and relentless sound make our recommendation a qualified one.

Yash's Rocky needs little help looking formidable in K.G.F: Chapter 2 (2022), but Prashanth Neel keeps supplying it. The brutal fights are part of the pleasure, especially with a leading man so composed at their centre. We found the confrontations exciting, then grew tired of the relentless sound and repeated insistence on Rocky's importance. Neel can make extravagant action worth watching, though this is a qualified recommendation for those who already have a taste for it.
The approach took shape in his Kannada debut, Ugramm (2014), an action thriller starring Sriimurali. K.G.F: Chapter 1 (2018) brought national recognition, and his Telugu debut, Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire (2023), put Prabhas at the centre. The films have grown in reach without Neel moving far from stories driven by promises or revenge. Smaller emotional moments matter to his method, too: the formidable men need some vulnerability if their troubles are to hold our interest.
Cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda is an important collaborator in a style that combines moving, handheld camerawork with slow-motion stunts and an emphasis on scale. Those choices give the leading man plenty of attention; Yash makes good use of it in K.G.F: Chapter 2. Composer and sound designer Ravi Basrur is another recurring collaborator, but the sheer persistence of sound in that film becomes wearing. The abrupt cutting is a further frustration in a film that is already exhausting over its full length.
The writing is where we would most like him to change. In K.G.F: Chapter 2, the plot's wildness is part of the fun, but the scenes between confrontations leave too much work to Yash. An action film need not obey everyday probability, yet it does need something to hold our interest while nobody is fighting. Neel too often asks the star's presence to do that job, so repetition sets in despite all the activity. For his next formidable man, a better scene between fights would be a useful place to start.
Biography
Prashanth Neel is an Indian film director and screenwriter who works predominantly in Kannada and Telugu cinema. He made his directorial debut with the action thriller Ugramm (2014), which he also wrote.
Neel gained wider recognition for writing and directing the two-part period action film series K.G.F: Chapter 1 (2018) and K.G.F: Chapter 2 (2022). In 2023, he made his debut in Telugu cinema by directing the action film Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, for which he also wrote the screenplay. He wrote the story for the action thriller Bagheera (2024).
