Biography
Robert Wright Campbell was an American screenwriter, novelist and occasional actor, often credited as R. Wright Campbell. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he studied painting at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn before moving to Hollywood after military service.
Campbell wrote screenplays for numerous films including Five Guns West (1955), Man of a Thousand Faces (1957), Machine-Gun Kelly (1958), The Secret Invasion (1964) and The Masque of the Red Death (1964), the last two in collaboration with Roger Corman. He also contributed episodes to television series such as Maverick and Marcus Welby, M.D.. Later in his career he turned to novels, notably the Edgar Award-winning The Junkyard Dog (1986) and the Whistler series set in Los Angeles.
He was the brother of actor William Campbell. Campbell died in Monterey, California, in 2000.
