Biography
Rafael Sánchez Ventura was a Spanish writer, academic and diplomat. Born in Zaragoza in 1897, he studied philosophy and letters at the University of Zaragoza and later earned a doctorate. He taught at the university and worked as a museographer and researcher, with particular interest in Aragonese Romanesque art.
He was a friend of Luis Buñuel from their time at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid and collaborated with him on the 1933 short film Land Without Bread (Las Hurdes: Tierra sin pan). Sánchez Ventura contributed to the screenplay and served as assistant director. This was his only credited work in cinema.
He held diplomatic posts during the Spanish Republic, including as secretary to the Spanish embassy in Paris, and later lived in exile in Mexico before returning to Spain in 1966. He died in Lisbon in 1980.
