Biography
Ritesh Batra is an Indian film director and screenwriter. His debut feature The Lunchbox (2013), which he also wrote, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival Critics’ Week and won the Rail d’Or (Grand Golden Rail). The film received a BAFTA nomination for Best Film Not in the English Language in 2015 and was the highest-grossing foreign-language film in North America, Europe and Australia in 2014.
Batra has since directed the English-language films Our Souls at Night (2017) and The Sense of an Ending (2017), an adaptation of Julian Barnes’s novel, as well as Photograph (2019). He was born in Mumbai in 1979 and studied economics at Drake University before working in film.
