Biography
Rob Sprackling is a British screenwriter and director. He trained as an actor at the Welsh College of Music and Drama before working as a stand-up comedian on the London circuit in the late 1980s and early 1990s, where he also ran his own comedy club.
In the early 1990s he began screenwriting with his long-term collaborator John R. Smith. Their credits include the comedy feature Mike Bassett: England Manager (2001) and its television spin-off, as well as work for Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Sprackling conceived and co-wrote the original screenplay for the animated feature Gnomeo & Juliet (2011), on which he is also credited for the story. He has since written for several animated features including The Queen’s Corgi (2019) and Panda Bear in Africa (2024), and contributed to Sherlock Gnomes (2018) as the originator of the characters.
He has also directed award-winning short films and worked on projects for studios including Disney, Aardman and Working Title.
