Biography
Robert Clavel was a French production designer and art director. Born in Paris on 15 October 1912, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and entered the film industry as an assistant decorator on Robert Bresson’s Les Dames du bois de Boulogne (1945). He became a chef décorateur from the late 1940s and worked on nearly eighty French films and co-productions until the late 1970s.
Clavel’s credits include The Count of Monte Cristo (1954), A Monkey in Winter (1962), Any Number Can Win (1963), Greed in the Sun (1964), Weekend at Dunkirk (1964), The Tattoo (1968) and Belle de Jour (1967). He collaborated extensively with directors Henri Verneuil (twelve films) and André Cayatte (ten films). He died in Paris on 14 July 1991.
