Biography
Robert Siodmak (8 August 1900 – 10 March 1973) was a German film director, screenwriter and producer. He worked in Germany, France and the United States, and is best known for his Hollywood thrillers and film noirs of the 1940s.
Born in Dresden, he began his career in the late 1920s and emigrated to the United States in 1939. His notable films include People on Sunday (1930), Phantom Lady (1944), The Spiral Staircase (1946), The Killers (1946), The Dark Mirror (1946) and Criss Cross (1949). The Killers earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
Later in his career he returned to Europe, where he directed Die Ratten (1955), which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, and The Devil Strikes at Night (1957). His brother was the writer and filmmaker Curt Siodmak.
