Biography
Rodrigue Mugaruka Katembo is a Congolese park ranger. Born in 1976 in Katana, South Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he became a ranger at Virunga National Park in 2003 after studying biology and natural resources management. He rose to warden of the park's central sector.
Katembo conducted an undercover investigation into attempts by SOCO International to drill for oil in the park, secretly recording evidence of corruption. Footage from the investigation featured in the 2014 documentary Virunga, in which he appeared as himself. He received the 2017 Goldman Environmental Prize for his work protecting the park.
