Biography
Samir Chanda was an Indian art director and production designer who worked across Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam and Tamil cinema. Born in West Bengal in 1957, he trained as a painter at the Government College of Art & Craft in Kolkata before moving to Mumbai. He began his film career as an assistant to art director Nitish Roy on Shyam Benegal’s Mandi (1983) and made his independent debut with Subhash Ghai’s Ram Lakhan (1989).
Chanda contributed production design or art direction to films including Dil Se.. (1998), Rang De Basanti (2006), Omkara (2006), Guru (2007), Kaminey (2009) and Raavan (2010). He also directed the Bengali film Ek Nadir Galpo (2008). He received four National Film Awards for Best Art Direction and a Filmfare Award. Chanda died in Mumbai on 18 August 2011.
